IPL delayed - as India goes into the lockdown.
The 13th season of Indian Premier League faces further
uncertainty, maybe even possible cancellation, as India entered into a
three-week lockdown starting March 25. Like all the other activities around the
world has stopped due to Covid 19 Cricket is also not in grounds due to the
current situation in the whole world. Before the Lock down in India BCCI
President Sourav Ganguly said “"I can't say anything at the moment. We are
at the same place where we were on the day we postponed. Nothing has changed in
the last 10 days. So, I don't have an answer to it”.
One of the options BCCI
opted to choose is to delay the league till 15th of April in order
to make sure things will get better but the situation not only in India but all
around the world is not looking very good. The possibility of rescheduling the
tournament altogether to later this year is subject to conflict with ICC's
Future Tours Program. India tour of Sirilanka in July for a full series and
then upcoming ODI Championship will make things more difficult for IPL this year.
Sports worldwide has been affected by the ongoing pandemic. Earlier Series
between India and South Africa is been postponed and the players soon leave
after that to their homes. Pakistan super league (PSL) Semifinals and the Final
is being Postponed and yet no Future date is being decided by Pakistan Cricket
Board Officials. It was the first time in almost a decade that Pakistan was set
to host such a lengthy period of high-profile cricket at home - with the second
leg of Bangladesh's tour to follow the PSL. However, even that has been
postponed for now. The impact of the break due to the Covid-19 pandemic will
even seep into the domestic structure, which is still in its first year since
the revamp. The Pakistan Cup - the domestic 50-over tournament - has been
called off along with a senior women's tournament that was set to feature the
top players split in two groups. Even for the associations, who are being aided
by the PCB to create their own revenue models, the process of bringing in
sponsors has been halted. The effects of these, however, are unlikely to impact
cricket in the long run.
